Toongi Pastoral Company
A wholly owned subsidiary of Alkane, Toongi Pastoral Company Pty Ltd (TPC) was established in 2016 to manage Alkane’s freehold and leasehold land and property assets surrounding the Dubbo Project (DP). This comprises a 3,500 hectare aggregation of several properties located 25km south of Dubbo. TPC will manage 1,021Ha of biodiversity offsets and 1,995Ha of agricultural land. (The DP mining and processing footprint will be 520Ha.)
First and foremost, TPC aims to operate a profitable mixed agricultural enterprise (sheep and cattle) that demonstrates best-practice sustainable farming technologies – including genetics, soil and pasture management, engineering solutions. The farming operation is overseen by an experienced Farm Manager.
Fast farm facts:
- 1,995Ha of agricultural land (85% arable), comprising alluvial creek flats rising to sedimentary and volcanic derived soils; lightly timbered with White Box, White Cypress Pine, Fuzzy Box and Currajong
- Includes six homesteads, two cottages and two houses in Toongi siding
- Also includes four shearing sheds, five sets of cattle yards, numerous sheds and silos, bores and earth tanks, and reticulated stock watering systems
- Land elevation 280m-420m above sea level; average annual rainfall (2001-2015) is 504mm with 98 rain days per annum
Management of biodiversity offset land
TPC is also responsible for managing 1,021Ha of designated biodiversity offset associated with the DP. These areas feature grassy white box woodlands, Wiradjuri cultural heritage sites and habitats for the Pink-tailed Worm-lizard, a vulnerable local species for which Alkane is taking a leading role in conservation.
TPC will engage with the local Rural Fire Service, local schools and Landcare groups in the same way as any other major landholder in the region.
