Tomingley Gold Mine

Tomingley Gold Mine offers rewarding career opportunities in a progressive and dynamic environment. Our employees benefit from the breadth of experience and collaboration that comes from working at a smaller operation.

We are a “residential” site, meaning all employees return to their own homes at the end of each shift (no FIFO). Our workforce spans geology, mining and development (underground and open cut), processing, finance and administration, maintenance (including trades), work health and safety (WHS), and environmental management.

The safety of our employees is our highest priority. We embed safety into every decision and action to drive continuous improvement in safety performance and maintain our record of zero fatalities. We actively encourage our employees to assess potential risks and think critically about what could go wrong.

Exploration centre

Based in Orange, Alkane’s successful exploration team uses the latest technologies and field techniques in exploration across our tenements in central NSW.

In recent years, the team has discovered the large gold-copper porphyry deposits at Boda and Kaiser. Alkane was awarded NSW Minerals Council Explorer of the Year in 2021 for the Boda discovery, and again in 2023 for the Kaiser discovery. Our geologists also continue to define new gold resources to extend the life of the Tomingley Gold Mine.

We employ geologists with a range of expertise and experience, as well as field technicians and supervisors. Roles are advertised on SEEK and we maintain relationships with geology departments of universities, including UNSW and the University of Tasmania.

Perth headquarters

Our Perth headquarters is where you’ll find most of our executive and senior managers, along with centralised services such as finance and legal.

Team profiles

Jason was appointed Tomingley General Manager Operations in 2021. He has a degree in Mining Engineering and more than 20 years’ operational experience.

I came to mining through a love of large machinery, hard work and the outback. It has taken me all over Australia, exposing me to different mining operations, each with their unique challenges and rewards. Along the way I’ve worked with a wide range of people and personalities. I love that every day is different.

My job is to lead our mine site to provide a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees and contractors. Also, to foster a productive environment for our people to successfully deliver the mine plan. Tomingley is a great “family” company where employees aren’t just a number. I love the fact I can come home to my family at the end of each working day.

It’s immensely rewarding watching people achieve and progress within the industry – from new employees “giving mining a go”, then progressing over the years to Shift Supervisors, leading crews of 20+ people (or going even higher). When most people start in the mining industry, they have very little idea of where it will take them or what they are personally capable of.

After working for a couple of years in research to build her skills, Crystal has now landed her dream job at Tomingley Gold Mine. She gained a Bachelor of Applied Science from Queensland University of Technology, majoring in Earth Sciences with minors in Geology and Environmental Science.

I knew I wanted to be a geologist since I was about four years old. Initially it was about “pretty minerals”, but later I became fascinated by unravelling the story in the rocks. Australia is one of the best places to study geology, because our continent is so ancient.

After a short stint in research after graduation, I was keen to try the two other main industries for geologists – exploration and mining. Tomingley Gold Mine has proved the perfect fit for me, it offers a mix of everything: we’re involved in the frontline of mining and production, as well as near mine exploration, while using the latest scientific research methods.

Overall, I’m loving my job. We have great mentorship and collaboration across the teams at Tomingley. I’ve made friends for life already. And my 7/7 roster offers fantastic flexibility and freedom.

Goddie joined Tomingley in 2019 as a production engineer and designed the drilling and blasting of our first underground stopes. He spent the first 10 years of his career in his home country of Zimbabwe, where he completed a graduate program in mining. Since 2011, he has worked for two other Australian mines in South Australia and NSW. He has a BSc (Hons) in Mining Engineering.

Growing up in one of the most active mining regions in Zimbabwe, I loved the way mining companies developed and supported the local communities. My father also worked in the mines as a safety officer, so I knew a few things about the industry before joining it myself.

My job at Tomingley allows me to interact with people from all levels – including management, underground operational teams and mentoring junior engineers. My role includes setting up mid-term to long-term plans for underground operations, and designing and sequencing activities to optimise productivity and profitability. It’s a great balance between technical, operational and human engagement.

Tomingley is a very friendly environment, with great trust and respect amongst all employees. Everyone is well-aligned to the company goals and is self-motivated to achieve them. It’s very rewarding being part of such a successful team.

Casey joined the Tomingley underground team in June 2021. Since entering the mining industry as a truck driver in 2005, she has worked her way up through a number of roles to her current job as bogger operator. Casey was the first female operator to work underground at TGO.

I grew up in Cobar, a small mining town, so I thought I’d give the industry a go. It’s good work and a great roster. I value the team environment and the focus on meeting our targets and getting the job done safely.

Over the years I’ve been able to advance my skills and progress my career through many different jobs. It’s satisfying to look at where I am now compared to where I started, and to see how much I am appreciated within my role.

The team at Tomingley are great value – always friendly and approachable. They have great communication and take safety seriously. Even though I never thought I would have stayed in mining this long, I still love this industry and my job just as much as when I first started.

Maddie moved to mining in 2018 after a 10-year career as a real estate agent. She joined Tomingley as underground administration assistant before progressing to her current role just five months later.

I was always interested in machinery growing up, and the lifestyle and financial benefits attracted me to mining. Leaving my real estate career was a big move, but the 7/7 roster gives me flexibility to live away from family, yet see them on my days off.

My job involves planning and scheduling underground mobile machinery – ensuring machines and parts are maintained and ready to allow maximum productivity. There’s no specific qualification required – the main skills are administration, organisation, people skills and love of machinery! I really enjoy the variety.

The team at Tomingley is second to none; there isn’t a person on site who wouldn’t stop to have a chat, treat you with respect and always offer to help. Working with great people you can have a laugh with when the pressure is on is always good for the soul.

Following a diverse career in the military, hospitality and training, Jason consolidated his experience and interests with a Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety.

I’ve always found safety interesting, and in many of my past roles I was on safety committees or involved in emergency response. So, when I was looking to reskill, it seemed a natural progression for me to formalise my safety qualifications.

Here I am, 13 years later, the bulk of that spent in mining. My current role involves providing advice to our teams on safety processes and compliance, and helping keep our safety management systems up to date with ever-changing regulatory requirements. I enjoy engaging and guiding our employees to develop their safety skills and expertise.

We have a very supportive management team at Tomingley. All employees are encouraged to speak openly about safety and know they will be heard. Adhering to site safety processes is never considered a road block or hindrance – it’s simply how we do business.

David has more than 30 years’ experience across environmental regulatory, technical and advisory roles. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Analysis) and a Masters of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

I got into the environmental sciences through a lifelong interest in land and natural resource management. My interest in mining, where environmental stewardship is so important, was sparked by exposure to several major greenfield mining projects while working for the NSW government.

The work is interesting and highly varied, providing a mix of office and field-based activities. It’s rewarding to ensure our environmental performance remains exemplary; even though we work in the background to some extent, our work is vital to help the company achieve some of its KPIs.

I joined Tomingley in early 2020, when I returned to central western NSW for quality of life and to be near family. There are good prospects for longevity of the mine and we have a great workplace culture, supportive executive team and strong leaders. I’m thankful to be part of a cohesive team doing work I enjoy and achieving personal and company goals.

Victoria joined the mining industry after she left school, determined not to have a typical “female” career. She is a licenced forklift operator.

I have close friends and family enjoying lifetime careers in mining, and always loved the idea of joining the industry too. I love being a part of something big and in a career no one expects. I also enjoy wearing work boots instead of heels!

In the warehouse, we’re responsible for the logistics of goods received and dispatched, which is critical to ensure the mine has the parts required to run smoothly on a day to day basis. I enjoy having a broad understanding of how the mine operates and how everything works.

We are a smaller operation that is achieving big things. Our team is full of genuine people who are a joy to work with. I love the fact I can comfortably work and be respected in a male dominated industry. Alkane is a big supporter of female employment and equal opportunity.

Giverny has a Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons) majoring in Earth Science. She started work with Tomingley in 2021 after working with Alkane’s exploration team for 18 months.

Even as a kid, I loved rocks, looking for pieces of quartz and fossils along the creek in my hometown. I chose to study earth science because it joined that love of rocks with the puzzle of figuring out a past environment through today’s rocks – not many people know Australia’s coast used to be much further west, but how else could we find marine fish fossils in places like Canowindra.

As a mine geologist, I’m part of the whole process – I collect, process and model geological data to better understand the geology of the ore body and advise on how to mine it effectively. The variety helps me stay engaged, and seeing how everything comes together is really satisfying.

Working in mining is a lifestyle more than a career at times. The 7/7 roster offers a perfect balance between work and home. Our workplace culture has allowed me to develop rewarding working relationships and I genuinely enjoy coming to work.

Alex has worked with Alkane’s exploration team, based in Orange, since 2019. He has a Bachelor of Science and PhD, both majoring in Geology.

Geology is the fusion of a range of different sciences. I was attracted by the chance to work all over Australia and overseas. I enjoy applying my knowledge and skills to build a story from the geology of an area, especially when there’s the chance to find a new ore deposit that could be worth millions or billions of dollars.

Our role is to understand the geology of the area being explored using a range of scientific and field techniques. We also work with local stakeholders to build community interest and engagement in local exploration projects to ensure effective exploration.

Alkane provides excellent support to develop my professional and scientific skills. There is easy communication across the company, and I’m always free to suggest new ideas. I feel like I’m valued and contributing to Alkane’s success.

Belinda joined Tomingley as our HR Manager in 2020. She has a bachelor’s degree and many years of HR experience. Her role at Tomingley oversees employee needs and the recruitment of our growing workforce.

I began my career as a payroll officer and worked up to a human resources officer role before becoming a HR manager. I find it really rewarding when I find the right candidate for a job, and I can sit back and watch them excel because it’s a great fit.

The team at Tomingley are highly skilled and professional across all departments. It is fast-paced, and people do what they say they will do, which makes everyone’s jobs easier. We are a safe and productive team with one goal – the safe production of gold bars!

I moved to mining from a government role, and everyone has been so willing to share their knowledge and help me learn everything mining. I would recommend a job in mining to anyone who asks. Tomingley in particular, is a great, safe and friendly place to work.

Jeffrey has been with Tomingley since April 2019. In his 18 year career, he’s worked at a number of mines around Australia and Papua New Guinea (PNG). He has a Bachelor of Engineering in Mineral Processing from PNG University of Technology.

I wanted to work in mining since I was in grade three in primary school in PNG. A team of exploration geologists inspired this passion when they landed at my school on a chopper. It seemed cool so I thought mining might be a good career.

My role is to provide metallurgical support to the operations and maintenance teams and work on improvement projects for the processing plant. I particularly like the sense of accomplishment gained from solving metallurgical problems on the plant. It’s also rewarding to carry a gold bar in my hands!

Working at Tomingley provides a great lifestyle balance. It’s the best roster and shift hours I’ve had in my career, working for six different mining companies. Even better, I can live in a city and go home to my family every afternoon.

Gemma has a Certificate 3 in Business Administration and a Certificate 4 in Business. She is currently completing further qualifications in accounts administration. Gemma joined Tomingley in 2021 after working in the mining industry for a safety contractor at many mine sites since she left school.

My job is providing administrative support and assistance to the organisation, including keeping office items stocked up, assisting with accounts payable, being an external contact point, and many more daily tasks. I have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the mining industry and look forward to learning more.

The most rewarding thing about my job is being able to help people. I’ve always loved talking to people and I try my best to put a smile on someone’s face each day. I also love working alongside some highly skilled people and learning from them.

It’s easy to go to work when it’s a caring and encouraging environment. I thoroughly enjoy working with my co-workers, and feel encouraged to try new things and strive to achieve. I look forward to what each day brings.

Mac grew up on a farm about an hour north of Dubbo. He gained a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Queensland and worked at a copper mine in NSW and in South Africa before joining Tomingley in mid-2020.

As a kid, I became aware of the mining industry when we drove past the huge open cuts in the Hunter Valley. I heard that the money and rosters were good. My love of data and analytics led me into engineering.

I’m a Drill and Blast Engineer at Tomingley, which means I blow rocks up for a living! It’s a fascinating challenge to design the optimum drilling pattern, creating holes that are filled with explosives to extract the gold ore from the rock with maximum safety and efficiency.

I enjoy being hands-on and collaborating with the underground mining crews. It’s not a conventional engineering role, but I like the blend of diverse people I get to work with.

Rosie has a Certificate 2 – Automotive Mechanical (specialising in air conditioning) and Certificate 3 – Automotive Electrical Technology. She joined Tomingley in early 2021 after completing her autoelectrical apprenticeship on farm equipment.

I grew up in a big city and wanted to be a mechanic from a young age. My husband was a diesel mechanic apprentice when we met, which inspired me to pursue the same trade. Moving out west to work in a rural, farming community has taught me more about agriculture, earthmoving, transport and mining than I ever imagined. I’ve never looked back.

At Tomingley, I’m gaining specialised experience by servicing, diagnosing and repairing electrical systems in vehicles, machines, equipment and air conditioning across the plant.

It’s really rewarding to fix faulty or broken things, but the best thing about my job is being part of a great team. I’m also lucky enough to live locally, so I’m home each night to see my family.

Jake joined Tomingley when we began underground work in December 2018. His electrical apprenticeship (Certificate III in Electrotechnology) opened doors into Australia’s diverse mining industry.

I began in the mining industry during the WA iron ore boom. Later I tried my hand in the hard rock mining industry and have worked in various mines across Australia. It’s good money and I’ve never looked like being out of work.

My current job is to plan underground electrical installations and projects, making sure they run safely and efficiently. Basically, we make sure the mining crews always have the power they need for drill rigs, communications, pumps, fans etc – and fix any electrical breakdowns. Every day is busy, different and goes extremely quick!

I enjoy the company of my team at Tomingley – they have a great attitude towards getting the job done. And management is always willing to listen to ideas for improving procedures. These days I enjoy working close to home with a roster that suits my family and lifestyle.
